The Iowa Mennonite girls basketball team gets the 2017-18 season underway tonight when they host the Mediapolis Bullettes.

IMS is coming off of a season that saw them finish 0-19. IMS will look to improve on the offensive side of the ball after a season where they finished at the bottom of the league averaging 35 points per game, shooting just 30 percent from the floor. They finished last season with just 120 assists to go with 348 turnovers.

Individually, IMS was led by Suzanna Yoder. During her sophomore season Yoder averaged 18 points per game, seventh most in the Superconference. Her 58 assists were also best on the team and 10th in the conference. She also finished with a team best 49 steals. IMS will have to replace their top two rebounders from a year ago. Mia Graber will miss her sophomore season because of a knee injury suffered during volleyball and Calli Shaw moved on through graduation. Along with Yoder, IMS does return players who saw important minutes last year including Alyssa Hershberger, Payton Hart, and Avery Blauvelt.

Mediapolis enters tonight’s action off of a 16-7 season a year ago. MEPO was impressive offensively, finishing second in Superconference shooting 40% from the floor, and 35% from beyond the arc. Their 1,423 total points and 62 point per game average far and away led the Superconference last season. The Bullettes were second in the conference in assists, steals, and had the fewest turnovers in the league at just under 12 per game.

Individually, MEPO was led by junior Mackenzie Rogers who led the Superconference and state in class 2A at 23 points per game. Rogers also led the conference and state with 168 assists. Her 108 steals were best in the conference and third in 2A. MEPO also has their leading rebounder back with Kaitlyn Thie pulling in 181 boards last year, fourth in the league.

The Bullettes swept the season series last year winning 60-37 at Mediapolis and 77-54 in Kalona and have won 21 straight in the series dating back to 2006.
