Title: Gingerbread House Contest
Description: Washington Public Library is having a gingerbread house decorating contest. Bring your uniquely decorated gingerbread house to the library from December 1-20 and the houses will be displayed the entire month of December. Voting ends December 20 and the winners will be announced December 27. Prize categories include children, teen, and adult.

Swedish Smorgasbord

Description: The local Swedish Smorgasbord will be taking place at the Parish Hall at the Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church on December 7. Tickets are $17 for a 5:00, 6:00, and 7 p.m. seating and can be purchased at the church. All proceeds go to mission work.

Description: Washington Public Library is hosting “Christmas Gone Green” on Saturday December 2 at 10 a.m. at the library. Learn how to transform an old book into a beautiful Christmas tree. This program is free and open to all ages, but 5th grade and under should be accompanied by an adult. Bring something special to adorn the top of your tree. All other materials will be provided. Registration is required for this event.

Description: The Washington Chamber of Commerce will be having its candlelight tour of homes December 2 from 4-8 p.m. and December 3 from 1-4 p.m. There will also be a sneak peek of Dodici Suites and a free photobooth and refreshments at Dodici Shop and Patricia’s Room. Tickets are $9 at the Washington Chamber of Commerce or $10 at door. Proceeds fund the Holiday Lights on the Square.

Location: Winfield
Description: Sunrise Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Winfield is hosting a free informational meeting on Medicare/Medicaid as well as general health insurance Monday November 27 from 6-7:30 p.m. The meeting is free and open to the public. A SHIIP counselor will be present to assist with understanding terminology and benefits, as well as comparing plan benefits.

Wellman Clover Kids

Description: Washington County 4-H will be starting a new Clover Kid Club serving the Wellman area. Clover Kids is a 4-H program for youth in K-3 grades that fosters positive relationships and builds valuable life skills through a variety of hands-on activities. The Wellman Clover Kids will meet November 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Asbury Methodist Church in Wellman, and will traditionally meet the fourth monday of every month. All youth and parents interested are encouraged to attend.

Description: Bundle up and sit in front of the Washington Public Library’s front windows to watch a live radio play production of Miracle on 34th Street performed by the community theatre and broadcast live by KCII Radio on Saturday November 25 at 6 p.m. Then stick around for the lighted parade downtown.

Description: Brendan Loula will be performing a noontime concert at the Washington Public Library on Saturday November 25 at 12 p.m. Loula will be performing Forro, a northeastern Brazilian genre popularized in the mid-20th century due to the efforts of singer/accordionist Luiz Gonzaga. This concert is free and open to the public.

Early Childhood Area Board meeting

Description: The DHLW Early Childhood Area Board will be meeting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday November 21 at the Presbyterian Church in New London. Early Childhood Iowa is a statewide initiative that provides local funding for programs serving all families with children under 5 years old. This board serves Des Moines, Henry, Louisa, and Washington Counties. The DHLW Board is currently seeking members from Des Moines and Louisa County.
