The Sigourney and Keota basketball teams clashed for area bragging rights on Tuesday with each school capturing a win.

On the girls’ side, Sigourney started up their season strong downing the Eagles 59-21. The Savages wasted no time to get going, jumping out to a 26-1 lead after the first and 45-5 into the break. The Savages cruised the rest of the way for the South Iowa Cedar League win. Autum Barthelman led the way with 18 points on eight of 11 shooting and four rebounds. Brooke Waechter was also in double figures with 10 points and seven steals. Sigourney starts the year up 1-0, as Keota drops to 0-3.

On the boys’ side, the Eagles continued their hot start offensively, winning 77-54. Out of the gates, it was Sigourney that delivered the first blow, leading 17-13 after the first. The Eagles settled in to win every other quarter including putting up a remarkable 30 points in the final frame to seal the victory. The win was in part by the one-two punch of Hunter Wilson and JD Stout combining for 47 of the team’s 77 points. Stout finished the night with 24 points on nine of 15 shooting and Wilson had 23 points connecting on seven of his 15 shots. Dustin Haines kept the Savages in it with 19 points including four threes. Keota moves to 2-0 on the year, as Sigourney drops to 0-1.
