The Washington girls’ basketball team gave the class 5A Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors a scare on Monday night but ultimately fell 59-48.

As heard on KCII, out of the gates it was all Demons, as they took care of the ball and dominated in the half court. Thanks to a pair of threes from Isabel Bailey and efficient free throw shooting the Demons led 18-9 after the first. The lead grew to as much as 12 when the Warriors stormed back utilizing their transition offense. The Demon lead was dwindled to 27-26 at the break. In the second half, foul trouble started to mount for the Demons including Morgan Brinning fouling out late in the third. That put a primary ball handler on the bench and the turnovers started to mount, desperately trying to break the stifling 1-2-2 press by the Warriors . The Warriors sped up the Demons and their lead grew to as much as 17 before capturing the 59-48 victory.

There were plenty of bright spots against the bigger Warrior team, including Sarah Nacos pacing the team with 15 points. Brooke Stout added seven points and nine boards.

With the loss the Demons fall to 1-1 on the year as the Warriors start up the season 1-0. Washington gets back at it Thursday hosting Burlington.
