The Washington basketball teams were back in action Friday night when they welcomed Keokuk to town for Southeast Conference play.

In the girls’ game, the pressure defense put on by the Chiefs was the difference, as they cruised to a 54-31 victory. Despite a sluggish first half, the Demons only trailed 20-12 at the break before a big third quarter broke things open. The Demons were able to slow down the continuity offensively for the Chiefs by going to a 2-3-zone, but they got the three ball going, and cruised to the 23 point win. Keokuk’s Keaja Lacy led all scorers on the day with 14 points. Sarah Nacos led the way for the Demons with 11 points and Brooke Stout added eight. With the loss the Demons drop to 3-6 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.

In the boys’ game, the Demons had everything clicking en route to a 69-47 thumping for their first win. Jack Redlinger scored the Demons’ first eight points of the game in a back and forth first quarter to take a 13-10 lead. The Demons started finding success in a 1-2-2 press that turned the Chiefs over and the lead grew to 31-19 at the break. A big third quarter open the floodgates for a 28-point lead thanks to the stifling Demon defense that the Chiefs had no answer for. The big story for the Demons was the contributions from all over, as 11 players scored headlined by Jack Redlinger with 17 points and Cale Hobscheidt added 11. Anthony Portratz led Keokuk with 12 points. The Demons get their first win of the year to move to 1-4 and 1-1 in conference play.

The Demons have one more contest before the holiday break on Thursday as the girls’ host Louisa Muscatine and the boys’ travel to Marion.
