Under changes to Iowa law that went into effect earlier this year, fireworks are permitted to celebrate the New Year.

However, cities have the authority to restrict or ban the use of fireworks within city limits. This fall, the Washington City Council limited the use of fireworks to three days each year, July 3rd and 4th, and December 31st. In the City of Washington, residents can use fireworks on property they own or have consent on New Year’s Eve between 9 a.m. and 12:30 a.m. January 1st.
