Iowa Mennonite School is having a two hour late start today (12/4) for students following the death of a student Friday evening.

The school will gather in the library at 10:10 a.m. for a time of togetherness and classes will be modified with multiple adults in the classrooms. Grant Wood AEA’s Critical Incident Stress Management team will be available.

According to school officials, sophomore Teresa Cardenas fell at an all-school social. Cardenas was a 15-year-old student from Iowa City. According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 8:18 p.m. Cardenas fell off of a ladder and emergency crews were called to the incident and worked to revive Cardenas but were unable to. She was taken to the University of Iowa Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Johnson County Ambulance, Kalona first responders, Air Care, and the Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office all responded to the incident.
