New information has been released on the death of Iowa Mennonite School student Teresa Cardenas.

Fifteen-year-old Cardenas died Friday night after falling at an all-school social event according to school officials. An investigation into the death is ongoing by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office pending results from an autopsy performed Monday. According to Detective Randy Lamm, Cardenas fell from a ladder going to the lighting rig in the Celebration Hall auditorium while she and other students were playing a game of hide-and-seek. Lamm says he was informed the students were told not to be in Celebration Hall that evening. According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 8:18 p.m. emergency crews were called to the school and worked to revive her but were unable to. She was taken to the University of Iowa Hospital where she was pronounced dead. IMS was closed Wednesday as a funeral service was held. IMS Principal Steve Schrag says the Grant Wood Area Education Agency’s Critical Incident Stress Management team is available this week for students and faculty.
