There will be a changing of the guard as the Washington City Council has a transition in council members and the mayor.

An open house for outgoing Mayor Sandra Johnson and councilor-at-large Kathy Salazar will be held Tuesday. After learning of the November election results, where current councilman Jaron Rosien was elected mayor, Johnson said, “I have mixed emotions. It feels a little bit like the mother that’s sending her firstborn to college, and kind of an empty-nester complex developing in me. It’s like raising kids, you know, I’ve been at it for 18 years on council, so to see those that we feel like maybe we have mentored a little bit pick up the mantel and move forward there’s a sense of gratification for that. But there’s also a sense of separation, you know, and separation anxiety, it feels a little bit like raising a kid.”

The new council members filling Salazar and Rosien’s seats are Elaine Moore and Fran Stigers. The open house will be held at the library 4:30-5:45 p.m. Tuesday.
