The two formerly separate Highland Elementary schools received different ratings for the 2017 Iowa School Report Card.

The now closed Ainsworth Elementary received a priority rating of 52.8 points, with 27.2 points in closing the achievement gap for free-or-reduced lunch students, students with an individualized education program, and/or students in the English language learners program. Riverside Elementary which is now Highland Elementary, rated as high-performing with 76.2 points. Highland High School and Middle School both rated as acceptable.

The Iowa School Report Card assigns one of six ratings to public schools: exceptional, high-performing, commendable, acceptable, needs improvement, and priority. The ratings are based on measures of achievement such as proficiency rates in math and reading, student academic growth, narrowing achievement gaps among students, and college and career readiness. For most measures ratings are based on data from the 2016-2017 and 2015-2016 school years.
