Work is beginning on the Kewash Trail spur through Willow Pond and out to the Kirkwood Washington County Regional Center.

The trail will go along the county’s farmland and Conservation Director Steve Anderson explained at a recent board of supervisors meeting that the fence line needs to be cleared before construction. There are nine to 12 clumps of mulberry trees to be removed in the south ditch of Lexington, as well as black cherry, mulberry, boxelder, and a few red cedar trees along the property line. Anderson shares, “We’re heading towards a bid letting working with the consultants and the DOT (Department of Transportation) and all of those, heading to the actual bid letting. With the goal of getting the construction window during 2018, which the guiding deadline for that is we have a REAP grant that actually expires at that time.” Also, they want staff to remove the trees before April to avoid issues with Indiana bat restrictions. The board of supervisors unanimously approved the clearing of the fence line and installation of a new fence if needed.
