The Washington basketball teams hosted Fairfield on Friday night for the first Southeast Conference matchup of the year.

As heard on KCII, the Demon girls fell to the defending conference champs 62-47. In the first four minutes the Demons were effective in handling the zone press put on by the Trojans (6-0) before foul trouble started to mount. The Trojans had a big second quarter in part by their playmaker Amber Buch. The senior nailed four of her six three pointers in the first half and the Trojans had a 31-17 lead at the break. The Demons continued to fight in the second half in part by a pair of threes from Sarah Nacos and the grittiness down low by Brooke Stout, but it was not enough, as Fairfield stayed undefeated on the year. Buch finished with a game-high 27 points and continues to be a Demon killer, as she has an average of over 20 points a game in five meetings in her career with Washington. Nacos led the Demons with 15 points and Stout added 10. Washington drops to 2-4 on the year.

In the boys’ game both teams were eyeing their first victory of the season. In the first half it was a track meet with both teams trading blows. After numerous lead changes the Trojans (1-3) had a slight 29-25 lead at half. A big third quarter was the difference for the Trojans, as they stretched the lead to as much as 14 to put the game out of reach. Inside out threes helped keep the Demons around but the Trojans held on for a 60-51 victory. The Trojans had the edge inside against a smaller Demon lineup, as Carson Crile led all scorers with 15 points. Jack Redlinger paced the Demons with 13 points including a pair of threes. Dalton Myers and Luke Turner added eight a piece. The Demons drop to 0-2 on the young season.

It was Slam Dunk Cancer Night at Washington where proceeds went to help with cancer research. The girls get back on the court today traveling to Dike New-Hartford and the boys travel to Iowa City Liberty on Monday.
