As daylight grows shorter and the temperature gets colder, curling up in a warm blanket sounds easy, but a sedentary lifestyle can lead to physical problems once spring sprouts its leaves.

Physical therapist Eric Turner of JET Physical Therapy says as the winter months progress he sees more injuries and painful conditions caused by lack of mobility. Turner advises how you can stay active just within your home, “As far as mobility exercises, as simply as standing up out of the chair, repeatedly doing some squatting motions, doing exercises with small weights. Depending on what someone’s level of physical fitness and strength level is they can perform some exercises with dumbbells or resistance bands. There’s lots of strengthening and stretching exercises that can be done on the floor if someone’s able to get up and down on the floor safely.”

Turner says it’s more difficult to get sustained exercise such as walking if a person can’t go outdoors in the winter but he recommends walking around a home if a person has a clear path in their residence. Regular chores such as cleaning can also help maintain an active lifestyle.
