A Dollar General store will soon be opening in Brighton, and this could have a positive impact on the city.

The store is planned to open January 29, at 503 West Fountain Street, also known as Highway 78. Brighton Chamber of Commerce President Nancy Adrian says this store will have a positive impact on the community, “I think it’s kind of like another breath of fresh air. It’s something new going on and where there’s new things happening there’s life. And I think there’s a lot of opportunities in Brighton with Lake Darling there close, and we’re kind of on the way to a lot of places. And so we’ve got a lot of things to share and I think this will help give people motivation to keep moving forward.”

Besides creating new jobs in the city and providing a local retail option, the city is beginning to work with the Washington Economic Development Group to create a tax increment financing (TIF) district around the store’s location. With a TIF district the city could use the property tax funds to make improvements on the area in the district along Highways 1 and 78, according to City Clerk Chris Davies.
