Temperatures have dipped below zero as of late and with winter travel there are some things you should keep in your car for safety.

Washington County Emergency Management Coordinator Marissa Reisen explains what you should have during these winter months, “Things to keep in your car: a flashlight with extra batteries, a first aid kit, jumper cables, a cell phone charger, kitty litter for traction if you get stuck, plenty of bottled water and non-perishable food items, granola bars are a great thing to keep in your car because they’re individually wrapped and they’re high in protein and all that good stuff that you need, of course you want a snow brush and an ice scraper, and a basic toolkit.” She says you should include blankets and extra clothing so that if you get stuck, you have a way to keep warm. If you do get stuck, she recommends running your car for about 10 minutes and then shut it off for awhile, and be sure that the exhaust is clear and free of snow. Also, remember to make sure your tires have decent tread for snowy and icy conditions.
