As southeast Iowa has received measurable snowfall, the City of Kalona wants to remind residents of its snow ordinance.

According to the city ordinance no person shall park or leave any vehicle on any public street, alley, or city-owned off-street parking area during snow removal operations unless the snow has been removed or plowed and the snow has ceased to fall. It is unlawful in Kalona to place any ice or snow from private property, sidewalks, or driveways onto a street or alley to obstruct gutters or impede the passage of vehicles on the roadway or create a hazard; except in the cleaning of large commercial drives in the business district it is necessary to move the snow onto the road temporarily and will be removed promptly by the property owner or agent. Property owners are responsible to remove snow and ice promptly from sidewalks, and if they don’t within a reasonable time, the city may do so and assess the costs against the property owner. The city is sending notices of their ordinance with water bills and is working with the Chamber of Commerce on educating downtown businesses.
