Speeding vehicles on Highway 22 in the city limits is an issue the City of Wellman is seeking to address.

The city council requested the Iowa Department of Transportation perform a speed study on Highway 22 going through the town and after doing the study the DOT said the city could change the speed limit from 25 miles per hour to 35 on Highway 22 west of 6th Avenue. The council expressed concerns on increasing the speed limit as that area is near Mid-Prairie West Elementary School. The city is looking into the cost of installing flashing signs that would show drivers their current speed and tell them to slow down.
