You have to love it when a plan comes together.

The No. 13 ranked Iowa Mennonite School boys basketball team flipped the script on No. 11 New London Thursday at Mediapolis, claiming their first district title since 2013 with a 61-54 victory over the Tigers. These two squared off at the Superconference Shoot Out two weeks ago in Mount Pleasant, a game the Tigers controlled to a 73-50 win. Thursday started much the same as round one, with New London racing out to a 19-6 lead. IMS used a 14-3 run during the second quarter to climb within two, but a Grant Swanson three at the halfime buzzer gave New London a 25-20 lead going to the break.

In the second half the Tigers came out red hot from the floor again. The best shooting team in the state, New London hit three three point goals in the first two minutes of the third quarter to move the spread to double figures. IMS again did not wilt. Sticking to the game plan and continuing to chip away, Iowa Mennonite would get within five going to the fourth quarter on a Trevor Leyden three at the buzzer of the third, making it 38-33 going to the fourth. In the final frame, IMS continued their run, scoring 28 in the quarter. IMS took their first lead of the night on a Reggie Borntrager layup with five minutes left, and they would never give it up. Down the stretch IMS got enough defense and clutch free throw shooting from Cole and Eli Ours to claim the district title.

Mitchell Schmeider led IMS with 20 points, 14 rebounds and six blocked shots. Eli Ours had 15, and Reggie Borntrager finished with 10. With the win IMS improves to 21-3 on the year and will play Saturday in Oskaloosa to try to get back to state for the first time since 2012.
