The No. 13 ranked Iowa Mennonite School boys basketball team saw their season come to a close Saturday at the hands of No. 4 Lynnville-Sully 52-48 in the substate round of the class 1A playoffs at Oskaloosa.

The Hawks were red hot early, knocking down their first five three point goals. They finished seven of nine from three on the night. Iowa Mennonite had a hard time finding an answer as they fought through a cold half from the field, trailing 17-9 after one quarter and 36-18 at the half.

In the second half, IMS chipped away, going to a 3-2 zone defense, they posted an 11-2 run to cut the L-S lead to nine, but the Hawks countered with five straight points to end the third, leaving the IMS deficit at 14 going to the fourth. IMS wouldn’t go away, another big run would get them as close as three in the final seconds but the Hawks did enough at the line to secure the win. IMS was led by Mitchell Schmeider’s 18 points and 12 rebounds. Reggie Borntrager finished with 10. IMS ends their season one step shy of the state tournament with a 21-4 overall record. They say good bye to seniors Cole Ours, Reggie Borntrager, Cameron Roser-Peet, Mitchell Schmeider and Isaiah Swantz.
