The Kalona City Council authorized the issue of a loan following the completion of the Salveson Creek restoration project.

A public hearing was held at Monday’s council meeting and the Storm Water Drainage Utility Revenue Capital Loan Note was issued not to exceed $225,000. The restoration work was done to stabilize and maintain the creek’s banks and provide a mechanism to slow down fast-moving water. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh explains the loan’s purpose, “We did a project north of the Highway 22 bridge on Salveson Creek. We did a streambank restoration project and that was to borrow the additional funds needed to cover that cost on that. And it’s being paid for through our $3 per month stormwater assessment fee, so it’s funds that we have saved and then we’ll cover the debt with those proceeds from that.”

The project was also funded with approximately $100,000 of grants from the State Revolving Fund.
