Should I stay or should I go?
That’s a question some drivers ask themselves when they are stuck on the side of the road due to winter weather conditions. Washington County Sheriff Jared Schneider gives advice, “The number one thing is to remain calm so you can assess the situation that you’re in, and try to make those decisions based on maybe your surroundings or the situation with your car, where it’s located.”
Whether it’s safer to stay in your vehicle or go outside in winter weather depends on the situation according to Schneider, “Take into consideration the amount of traffic on the roadway. What are the conditions outside? Is it safe to get out of your vehicle, maybe to walk up to that next house if you don’t have a cell phone.”
Schneider says it’s important to be prepared before you head out on the road with an emergency supply kit, and a charged cell phone. He also urges drivers to check the weather forecasts for their journey and be aware of what weather patterns will reach them at their destination.
