This is a recap of Thursday’s opening day action and a preview for day two on Friday at the 2018 Individual State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines for area athletes:

In Class 1a

Sigourney-Keota had No. 9 Mason Dye beat Seth Danker of Adair Casey/Guthrie Center Thursday by a 15-3 major decision to move into the quarterfinals Friday at 106lbs. Dye will face #2 Beau Klingensmith of Woodbury Central. At 220lbs for the Cobras No. 2 Kaleb Reeves beat Joel Mendoza of Eagle Grove by fall Thursday to move to the quarterfinal round of the tournament to take on No. 5 Zack Santee of Central Springs Friday.

Aaron Slaughter of Lone Tree dropped his opening match at 113lbs to Will Martin of Moravia 9-7 in overtime Thursday. Slaughter rebounded with a win over Aiden Christiansen of Hinton by fall in the consolation bracket to stay alive. Slaughter will wrestle again Friday in the consolation rounds against an opponent to be determined.

Highland’s Brady Hahn was a winner in his opening match Thursday taking out Kameron Black of Mason City Newman Catholic. Hahn will be in the 145lb quarterfinals Friday where he’ll see Nicholas Martin of Moravia

No. 8 ranked Cody Crawford of WACO fell in his opening match at 285lbs Thursday against No. 2 Enrique Maravilla of Manson Northest Webster by fall. Crawford came back to win his first consolation match by fall over Grant Battreal of Montezuma. Crawford will be back in consolation action Friday against an opponent to be determined.

In Class 2A

The Washington Demons Walker Ikerd opened the 120lb bracket by falling in his first match Thursday to No. 8 Kurtis Krager of OABCIG. Ikerd stayed in the tournament by winning his first consolation match 14-10 over No. 9 Bryce Hatten of Winterset. At 170lbs No. 3 Tristan Westphal-Edwards got by No. 10 Lincoln Coakley of Estherville-Lincoln Central by 9-8 decision. Westphal-Edwards advances to Friday’s quarterfinal round to take on Mount Vernon’s Paul Ryan. At 285lbs Mitchell Huisenga dropped his tournament opener to No. 1 Cooper Lawson of Webster City by 6-1 decision. Huisenga came back to win his first consolation match by an 8-1 count over Mario Moncada of South Tama. Huisenga will continue in consolation action Friday against an opponent to be determined.

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union Wildcats rolled on day one of the tournament with top ranked Jared Kadel at 106lbs shutting out Cole Whitehead of Center Point Urbana 9-0 to advance to the quarterfinals Friday against No. 6 Jacob Mielke of Pocahontas Area. At 138lbs Cam Rice beat Kruise Kiburz of Winterset 3-0. Rice will be back on the mat in the quarterfinals today when he faces No. 4 Tanner Probasco of South Tama County.
