A Wayland man was hurt in a three-vehicle wreck in Greene County Monday morning.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, shortly before 10 a.m. a semi-tractor trailer hauling hogs driven by 37-year-old Travis Davis of Wayland failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with another semi that was carrying 8,300 gallons of gasoline. The fuel tanker was westbound on Highway 30 and driven by 34-year-old Jeffrey Mercer of Osceola. Davis’s semi jackknifed in a ditch. The fuel tank separated from the truck; the tank went into another ditch and instantly caught fire. Mercer pulled over to the north ditch.

Then a pickup truck driven by 50-year-old David Reed of Jefferson struck some of the debris and entered the south ditch, where his vehicle also caught fire from the fuel tanker.

According to Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams, Davis was ejected from his vehicle and taken to a Des Moines hospital with life-threatening injuries. Reed suffered minor injuries and was taken to Greene County Medical Center by Greene County Emergency Medical Services. Mercer was uninjured.

Hazmat crews were brought in as a precaution, but crews decided to let all of the gasoline burn off instead. All three vehicles were totaled.
