Grain bin entrapment is a danger that can lead to death for farmers.

The Wellman Volunteer Fire Department is now better equipped to save lives with a rescue tube they received with help from DuPont Pioneer. Wellman Fire Chief Jeremy Peck says the department wrote a grant request to obtain a rescue tube and auger. The tube, when placed around a person trapped in a bin full of grain, keeps grain from continuing to roll down and further trap the person. The auger then eliminates grain from the tube and frees the person from the pressure of the grain. Prior to having the tube, Peck says they used to place EMS long and short backboards around the person and used buckets to remove the grain, which wasn’t nearly as quick or effective as the tube. Peck says he hopes the tools will never have to be used, but being prepared with the proper equipment makes their duties as volunteer firefighters much easier.
