The Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team had a solid start to their postseason run on Thursday when they downed New London 51-27 in the first round of the class 1A playoffs.
The Wolves were efficient in the first quarter jumping out to a 15-7 lead. The offense went cold for the next two quarters, as it was just a seven-point lead heading into the final frame. WMU was not going to be denied in the fourth outscoring the Tigers 20-3 to seize the 24-point win. The Wolves dominated the rebounding department 53-31 and held New London to shoot 15% from the floor. Lexee Hartsock had a big night with 29 points, 13 rebounds, and four blocks. Karley Schlee added eight points for WMU.
The Tigers finish the season 2-19 and the Wolves improve to 11-11. They advance to the second round on Tuesday hosting Holy Trinity.
