Scams have been reported across the Midwest by energy providers.

According to Alliant Energy, scammers claim to be from the company and threaten to disconnect a service if the customer doesn’t immediately make a payment with a prepaid credit card. Alliant Energy does not request immediate payment or prepaid credit cards and doesn’t threaten to disconnect utilities through text messages. Some scammers can edit caller-ID displays, so that the call’s origin looks like it is from the company.

If you receive such a phone call stop the conversation and hang up the phone. Then call Alliant Energy to verify your account status. Any such phone calls should also be reported to local law enforcement.
