Turn around, don’t drown – that is what is advised if you encounter a flooded road in your car.

A flash flood can happen within minutes or hours of heavy rainfall. Already this year Highway 22 had standing water that reduced traffic to one lane due to heavy rains, and the same day the City of Washington had standing water in town. If you happen across standing water Washington County Emergency Management Coordinator Marissa Reisen advises what you should do, “Definitely don’t go into the water. If it’s standing water it only takes about two feet of water to float your car, and if there’s a current with that water as little as six inches can move your vehicle. And if you’re walking through it and it has a current it doesn’t take that much to knock you down and sweep you away.” She adds, there’s also often debris in the water and it’s hard to tell if the road has been washed away.
