The Washington Demon girls track and field team opens the season tonight when they travel to Mount Vernon to host the Demon Indoor Meet at Cornell College.

This meet is a showcase for the best girls track teams in the state of Iowa with a field that includes schools from all four classes. The Demon girls are coming off of a stellar 2017 season that saw them qualify for the state meet in Des Moines in five different events including Hannah Anderson in the 100, 200 and long jump, Ashley Telleen in the 400m hurdles and the 4×200 team.

This is the first of two meets on back-to-back days that Washington will host at Cornell’s indoor facility in what has become the traditional, unofficial kickoff to the spring sports season in Southeast Iowa.

Joining the Demon girls tonight are 28 total teams including area schools Columbus and Highland along with Cedar Rapids Xavier, Anamosa, Bettendorf, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids Washington, Clear Creek Amana, Danville, Davenport Central, Davenport North, Fairfield, Fort Madison, Iowa City City High, Iowa City Liberty, Iowa City Regina, Iowa City West, Keokuk, Linn-Mar, Mason City, Mount Pleasant, Mount Vernon, New London, Ottumwa, Cedar Rapids Prairie, Solon, West Burlington and Williamsburg.

Action starts at 4PM this afternoon and continues into the evening at Cornell College.
