Finnish musicians will be visiting Washington as part of Folkfest and teaching the community about their traditional instruments and music.

Washington Community Center manager Cat Nelson explains Kardemimmit, “These are four ladies who are considered the best kantele players in Finland. And they do a mix of traditional Finnish music, and they’ve been writing and composing their own more modern music to be played on their traditional instruments.” The Scandinavian group will visit local schools and nursing facilities, have a Finnish themed dinner at Cafe Dodici, hold a free music demonstration at the Washington Public Library, and will have a program with the LET’s Center about Finnish song and dance, and will wrap up the week with a concert at the community center March 31st. Washington is the group’s only Iowa stop and the week-long activities are sponsored by a grant from Arts Midwest.
