Farmers across the state need to take precautions to avoid corn spoiling this spring, due to the increased kernel fill from last fall, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

In addition to higher yields, the mild weather in September and October increased kernel fill making corn denser and not dry as easily. To prevent spoilage, producers should take grain samples from the core of the grain bin to identify moisture content. Charles Hurburgh, a professor and grain quality and handling specialist with ISU, says a one to two percent high moisture content difference is anticipated. He says warmer weather with consecutive days at 50 degrees, the top of the bins will warm up and could result in spoilage. He says farmers should be prepared to turn fans on or return grain to the dryer if necessary.
