The No. 10 ranked Wapello Indian boys basketball team saw their record setting season come to a close Monday at the hands of No. 1 Treynor in the quarterfinal round of the class 2A  state tournament by a 59-53 score.

The Cardinals scored the first four points of the game, only to see Wapello answer with 10 straight to take a lead they would not give up the rest of the first half. Despite Cardinal three point goals at the end of each of the first two quarters, Wapello held a 17-14 lead after one quarter and 28-27 at the half.

Treynor came out of the break with four straight points in the paint, taking a lead they would not give up the rest of the afternoon. The Cardinals stretched it as far as 10 with four minutes left in the game when the Indians made a final push. An 8-0 Wapello run got them back within two but a clutch three pointer from Luke Clausen and Cardinal free throws held the Indians at bay.

Dillon Faubel led all scorers on the day with 28 points for Treynor. Keaton Mitchell paced the Indians with a double double 15 points 11 rebounds on the big stage. Trenton Massner and Gage Witte each ended with 12 points.

With the loss Wapello ends their season at 23-2. Treynor stays undefeated at 25-0, advancing to Wednesday’s state semifinal round.
