The Wapello Indian boys basketball team is set to open the class 2A state tournament today when they face off with the Treynor Cardinals.

Wapello enters today’s action with an overall record of 23-1, champions of the Southeast Iowa Superconference. Wapello is ranked No. 10 in the state in the latest poll from the Iowa Associated Press. The Indians advanced to state with a 55-46 win over Northeast Goose Lake on Saturday behind 25 points from Trenton Massner. On the season the Indians are led by Massner who is second in class 2A scoring 23 points per game. He leads the state with 177 assists. Keaton Mitchell leads the Indians on the glass with 214 boards, 10th most in 2A. The Indians are making their second all-time trip to the state tournament and looking for their first ever win.

The Treynor Cardinals enter today with an overall record of 24-0, champions of the Western Iowa Conference. They are ranked No. 1 in the state in the latest poll from the Iowa Associated Press. The Cardinals advanced to the state tournament with an 81-50 win over Woodward-Granger in Saturday’s Substate Final behind 26 points from Luke Clausen. On the season the Cardinals are led by Clausen averaging 18 points per game, best in the Western Iowa Conference. Dillon Faubel leads Treynor and is seventh in the state with 134 assists. Jon Schwarte leads Treynor on the glass with 187 rebounds second most in the Western Iowa Conference. They are making their 14th all-time appearance at state, with their last coming in 2015 when they were state champs.
