Kalona residents will have a nine percent decrease on their city property taxes in the next fiscal year.

The Kalona City Council held a public hearing on the 2018-2019 budget, in which the only public comments city officials mentioned were generally positive. The council adopted the budget and certification of the city taxes, which is $11.45 per $1,000 valuation, $1.01 less than last year.

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh comments on the budget, “The biggest changes are we kind of held the line or we did hold the line on our normal expenses whether that be parks and recreation, general government and so forth. We did have a slight increase in our tax base which is due to construction of new homes, revaluations and so forth through the assessor, so that was positive.”

The city’s total projected revenue for the next fiscal year is $3,075,310 and total projected expenditure is $3,436,126.
