A Cedar Rapids man faces multiple felonies after breaking into a home, stealing a vehicle, and leading law enforcement on a pursuit through Mt. Pleasant and on Highway 218 Thursday morning.

According to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, at 9:53 a.m. a burglary in progress was reported to authorities in the 1800 grid of Graham Avenue, where a man had gone into a residence and left when confronted by the homeowner.

The man, 40-year-old Ryan Hiemstra, stole a nearby vehicle and left. The vehicle was located in Mt. Pleasant and police attempted to stop him, but Hiemstra led authorities on a chase. He went south on Highway 218, then through various streets of Mt. Pleasant. The pursuit went onto North Carnahan Road where he caused damages to a yard of a residence and struck a county squad car. Hiemstra lost control, was stopped, and was taken into custody.

He is charged with burglary in the second degree, theft in the second degree, eluding pursuing law enforcement vehicles, criminal mischief in the second degree, criminal mischief in the fifth degree, and numerous traffic violations. Bond was set at $16,000. Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Mt. Pleasant Police, Mt. Pleasant Fire and Rescue, and the Iowa State Patrol assisted with the case.
