A man fired a gun, then led a pursuit outside Columbus Junction before dying Monday.

According to the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office at 6:37 p.m. deputies received a call about a disturbance at a residence located in the 18000 block of County Road X17. The caller said the person causing the disturbance was 39-year-old Cody France of Muscatine, and about five minutes later France fired several rounds at the caller with a semiautomatic handgun. France then left driving an SUV. Deputies attempted a traffic stop, but France refused to pull over and a pursuit ensued reaching speeds of 80 miles per hour. An Iowa State Patrol trooper was able to deflate one of the driver’s front tires, and France eventually came to rest in a field northeast of Fredonia. Deputies tried to communicate with France but were unable to. A tactical team approached the SUV and found him deceased in the front seat. It was determined France died from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. There were no other injuries or casualties in the incident. Law enforcement considers this a family dispute situation and the investigation is ongoing. Louisa County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Muscatine Police Department, Columbus Junction Police Department, Winfield Police Department, and Columbus Junction Ambulance Service all assisted.
