Man Leads Pursuit in Mount Pleasant, Charged with OWI

An Illinois man was arrested for operating while intoxicated, eluding law enforcement, and other offenses in Henry County Saturday.

According to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, at about 1:04 a.m. deputies attempted a traffic stop on a white 2005 Acura SUV in the 1100 block of East Washington Street in Mount Pleasant for speeding and failing to stop at a stop sign. The driver, 44-year-old Timothy Smith of Diamond, Illinois, then led deputies on a pursuit and was eventually stopped in an alley near Casey’s General Store. The pursuit was approximately one mile through town. Smith was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated first offense, eluding, interference with official acts, restrictions on transportation of alcohol, reckless driving, speeding, failing to obey a stop sign and yield right of way, and failing to provide proof of financial liability. Mount Pleasant and New London Police Departments assisted in the investigation.
