Washington County saw an increase in the number of children covered by the state’s Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, from 2014 to 2017.

The increase in Washington County was 84% over those three years. CHIP is health care coverage for families whose income is too high to qualify for Medicaid, but too low to afford individual or work-provided health care. This program includes Medicaid expansion, and the Healthy and Well Kids in Iowa Program, also known as hawk-i. From 2014 to 2017 Keokuk County’s enrollment went up 37%, Henry County increased 14%, Jefferson County increased 40%, and Johnson County increased 318%. Iowa County decreased 26% and Louisa County dropped 4%.
