A rite of passage is coming up for many area high school students and it can serve as a key time to communicate with your son or daughter about making safe and smart decisions.

Mid-Prairie High School’s prom is this Saturday, and Principal Jay Strickland advises parents on what to do leading up to the event, “I think it’s a good opportunity to talk about making safe choices and also communication. I would encourage parents to establish some system of communication that they can have with their kid throughout the evening. Obviously during the prom, but also with after-prom I think communication, safety, making good choices, know who they’re going with, and where they’re planning on going, and who’s driving.”

Strickland recommends parents have contact information for who their children plan to be with, and he notes that administrative staff will be at the prom in case a parent needs to reach their child. For those seeking a safe after-prom option for their kids, the junior class parents have organized an after-prom at Colonial Lanes in Iowa City.
