Area fire departments were busy Sunday extinguishing field fires.

According to the Washington County Communications Office, at 3:12 p.m. Riverside Fire Department extinguished a hog compost pile and 12 round hay bales that were on fire along 135th Street. At 3:51 p.m. a controlled burn of grass got out of control in the 1900 block of Ginkgo Avenue near West Chester and Wellman Fire Department extinguished the fire. A few hours later at 7:39 p.m. a corn field was on fire along Highway 1 near the Johnson Washington Road and Kalona Fire Department put it out. Brighton Fire Department extinguished a field fire south of a house in the 2800 grid of Ginkgo Avenue. No injuries were reported.
