Liability concerns have caused the Washington County Conservation Board to cancel firewood permits at this time.

Conservation Executive Director Steve Anderson said that while eliminating the firewood permits creates more work for conservation staff to get rid of unwanted trees, that factor is weighed against potential liability issues involving permit holders and conservation property, “The permit as we have been using for a number of years, there was some concern expressed that we had some liability with it. There likely is an avenue to overcome that, but we haven’t gotten the contract language yet finalized to where we would ask the board to consider that.”

The permit had allowed people to go in and cut downed trees for firewood on county park property and then remove that firewood. Anderson says current permit holders have been notified of the situation, and the staff is working on creating a new contract that reflects the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ language for such permits. Anderson hopes to get a new contract sent for board approval in the next couple months.
