The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk baseball team travels to West Liberty Thursday to open the conference season against the Comets in a doubleheader.

Mid-Prairie kicked off the year in a big way Tuesday with a 13-0 win over Keota. The Hawks had six hits, with Stephen Miller driving in four and Keaton Duwa three offensively. Brad Tornow collected the win for the Hawks going two innings, not allowing a hit, striking out five and walking one. As a team a year ago, Mid-Prairie hit .287, led by Jacob Leonard and his .375 average. Tornow is the returning ace of the Golden Hawk staff, with his 6-4 record in 2017 and 2.61 ERA.

West Liberty enters play with a record of 0-2 on the early season. They were swept by Central DeWitt 11-0 and 3-0 on Tuesday. Last year the Comets had a 9-20 overall record. West Liberty hit .229 at the plate led by Noah Feldman’s .325 mark. On the mound the Comets had a collective 6.23 ERA with Brent Meyers leading the way at 3-2 overall and a 3.85 ERA in 36 innings of work. These two teams met in a doubleheader last season with the Golden Hawks getting a sweep 10-0 and 15-2.
