All eyes in the area turned to Wayland Thursday night for the class 1A state track qualifier at Roth Field.

The champion of every event automatically punched their ticket to the state meet in Des Moines. On the boys side of the meet Lone Tree had the top area finish taking fourth with 65 points. Lisbon was the meet champion with 130.5 points. The Lions automatically qualified a pair of events for Des Moines with Brady Dauber winning the long jump clearing 20’2″. Casey Shalla was the shot put winner with a throw of 43’3″. Other top performances for the Lions included second for the 4×800 team of Dauber, Harmon Miller, Keegan Edwards and Brock Smith and a third place for the 4×400 of Dauber, Miller, Edwards and Smith and the shuttle hurdle team of Alex Viner, Levi Sotzen, Konner Coppinger and Ty Griffin. Griffin was also third in the 400 hurdles.

Winfield-Mt. Union was fifth in the team race with 64.5 points. Top finishes for the Wolves included second place for Brandon Snowden in the 200 and 400 with a third place in the 100. Second for Kolten Buster in the high jump, third for Brody Barton in the 3200 and Dane Sweezer in the 110 hurdles and a third place finish for Kolten Buster, Juanito Piper, BJ Rodgers and Brandon Snowden in the 4×100.

The Sigourney Savages were sixth with 55 points. Top finishes for Sigourney on the night came in field events with Payton Schauf second in the discus and Carson Crawford runner-up in the shot put.

The WACO Warriors were seventh with 52 points. Colton Horak is going to Des Moines in the 400 hurdles after his championship in a time of 58.03 seconds. Other top finishes for WACO included second for the 4×100 team of Calvin Battle Jr., Drew Kissel, Elijah McGohan and Colton Horak, second for the shuttle hurdle team of John Skriver, McGohan, Kissel and Horak and third place for the sprint medley team of Battle Jr., Kissel, Horak and McGohan.

The Keota Eagles were eighth with 28 points. Top finish for Keota came in the distance medley with the team of JD Stout, Luke Greiner, Logan Sieren and Justin Moeller third.

Iowa Mennonite School was 12th with 21 points. Levi Geyer is going to state after winning the 3200 in 10:26.81. Geyer also finished second in the 1600.

Highland was 13th with 17 points. Top finish for the Huskies came from Zack Lasek in the shot put with a third place.

On the girls side of the meet the Highland Huskies had the top area finish, they were team runners-up with 92 points. Danville took the team title with 119 points. The Huskies had a pair of events automatically qualify for Des Moines with Emily Yahnke winning the 100 in the a time of 12.67 seconds and she also took the long jump with a leap of 17’3″. Other top finishes for the Huskies included Kaylee Rath second in the shot put, second for the 4×200 team of Sarah Schneider, Aly Stokes, Kristy Thomann, and Yahnke, second for the 4×100 team of Schneider, Stokes, Thomann and Yahnke and third for Zoe Mahler in the 1500.

Sigourney was fourth with 76 points. The Savages have a pair of automatic state qualifiers with Autum Barthelman winning the 100 hurdles in 15.39 seconds and the shuttle hurdle team of Autum Barthelman, Leah Carter, Sloane Magill and Summer Barthelman grabbing gold in 1:07.79. Other top finishes for the Savages included Autum Barthelman second in the 100, Summer Barthelman second in the 400 hurdles, and second and third respectively for Megan Stuhr and Kaylee Weber in the discus.

Winfield Mt. Union was seventh with 47 points. A pair of events automatically qualified for state for the Wolves with Cecilia Hemsworth winning the 800 in 2:33.08 and Anna Hudson taking the shot put with a throw of 34’5.75″. Other top finishes for WMU included Isabella Mertens third in the 3200 and third for the distance medley team of Mary Guillen, Avery Maeder, Jami Wilkerson and Cecilia Hemsworth.

The WACO Warriors were ninth with a team score of 36 points. Top finish for WACO came from the shuttle hurdle team of Kiana Miller, Grace Conwell, Laney Graber and Molly McLaughlin in third.

Lone Tree also finished with 36 points. Top finishes for the Lady Lions included second for Emily Feldman in the 100 hurdles, second for the shuttle hurdle team of Holley Johnson, Zoie Simonsen, Chloe Jacque and Feldman, second for the 4×800 team of Macie Bopp, Natalie Patterson, Sydney Alt and Heather Geiger and third for Johnson in the 100 hurdles.

Iowa Mennonite was 13th with 17 points. Top finish for IMS came from Suzanna Yoder as runner-up in the 400.

The full list of state meet qualifiers will be made official Friday.
