A date has been set for a special election to fill the vacant seat on the Washington City Council.

The Ward 1 election will be held July 10th. Polls will be open from noon to 8 p.m.

The council had the option to either appoint a person to fill the vacancy left by Kerry Janecek or to hold a special election. With four people expressing interest in joining the council, the decision was made at their last meeting to hold a special election, which council member Brendan DeLong said, “I’m kind of with Elaine (Moore), I was kind of leaning more towards an appointment, I didn’t really like the idea of spending money on an election and the time-frame, and everything. But now that there’s four people interested, I think [an election] would probably be the correct way to go.”

Those who would like to run must reside in Ward 1 and file their nomination papers by the end of the day June 15th.
