With cloudy, rainy days lately it may not be feeling like summer but the season officially started on Thursday with the summer solstice and with that you are reminded to protect your skin with sunscreen.

Administrator of Washington County Public Health Danielle Pettit-Majewski recommends using a sunscreen with an SPF, or sun protection factor, between 15 and 50 and reapply it every two hours. Even on cloudy days sunscreen is recommended, and Pettit-Majewski says it’s good to get your family in the habit or using it, “Getting them in that habit and making them realize it’s not just for pool days, it’s not just for beach days, it’s really for every day.” The ultraviolet rays that cause damage are still in the atmosphere on cloudy days. Each year over five million cases of skin cancer is diagnosed in the United States, it is the most common type of cancer. The Centers for Disease Control recommends a broad spectrum sunscreen which will have both UVA and UVB protection.
