From gazing at stars to zumba in the park, there’s no shortage of events for residents of all ages and Star Trek fans at Trekfest XXXIV.

This year’s theme revolves around the Star Trek villain Khan, with a showing of “Star Trek: Into Darkness” Friday night, and a presentation about the making of “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” Friday at St. Mary’s Parish Hall. Five musical acts will be performing in Hall Park Friday and Saturday, the Highland Robotics team is hosting a tournament featuring robotics teams from across the state, as well as a Bill Riley Regional Talent Show. Annual favorites include the demolition derby and fireworks display, and the lifesize statue of Captain Kirk will be unveiled Saturday.

Trekfest Executive Director Kevin Meller shares what makes Trekfest special, “It’s just a very unique event that it’s big community oriented, but it also has a science fiction feel that you’re not going to get at very many other community festivals. There’s some entertaining speakers, being able to see the statue, being able to listen to all those great bands, St. Mary’s pancake breakfast and the 5k are always a blast in the morning, so there’s just a lot of fun things to do and we try to make the majority of it free.”

You can find a full schedule of events at Trekfest.org. The KCII Big Red Radio is beaming up to Riverside Saturday, broadcasting live from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. as part of the KCII Summer Town Tour.
