A Brighton teenager was struck and killed by a train Saturday.

According to the Iowa State Patrol at about 1:09 a.m. 18-year-old Lydia Danielle Johnson was driving a Ford Focus northbound on North Iris Street in Mount Pleasant at the intersection with the BNSF Railroad Crossing when the gates were down and the lights were flashing to indicate an approaching train. Johnson attempted to drive around the railroad crossing gates and was struck on the broadside by a westbound locomotive. Johnson’s vehicle came to rest on the northwest side of the railroad crossing and the train came to a stop on the tracks.
