The Iowa Mennonite School baseball team sprung the upset trap Thursday on the road against No. 8 New London in the semifinal round of the class 1A district tournament, beating the Tigers by an 8-3 score.
In a game heard on KCII, IMS was looking for revenge after suffering an 11-1 setback against the Tigers in the regular season. The IMS offense struck first with a single run in the top of inning one when Trevor Leyden doubled in Cole Ours to make it 1-0. New London had the answer in the bottom of the frame, pounding out three hits and scoring twice to take a 2-1 lead. From there, IMS took control scoring in each inning but the fourth and seventh including two in the second to go back on top 3-2, one in the third, three in the fifth and one in the sixth. The three run fifth came against Sam Loyd who had given up just two earned runs all season, as IMS got RBI from Blake Bontrager and Jacob Boller in the frame. Defensively, IMS was stellar all night, not committing a single error in backing Blake Bontrager on the mound, who threw a complete game in the win, scattering seven New London hits and giving up just three runs.
IMS had nine hits as a team, led by Boller and his two for four night with four RBI.
With the win, IMS improves to 15-9. New London ends their season at 21-3. IMS will play Burlington Notre Dame on Saturday for the class 1A district 10 championship in New London. We’ll have that game for you live on AM 1380, FM 102.5 and KCIIradio.com, beginning with the Washington HyVee pregame show at 6:30 and first pitch at 7p.m. live from Tiger Field in New London.
