A subdivision and Tax increment financing (TIF) application was presented to the Kalona City Council at their recent meeting.

Chad Mellinger proposed a subdivision for a parcel of land between H and J Avenue north of the Mid-Prairie Middle School. City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says the land is zoned R-2 which can be developed for single and multi-family housing, “The preliminary plat calls for 12 new parcels to be put on it, based on the zoning it could have 12 multi-family units with 24 total doors up there. But realistically it’s probably going to be a mix, 75/25 single family multi family or vice versa but it’s going to have a mix of both types of housing.”

Mellinger requested the city give him TIF payments of $250,000 over eight years for the subdivision. The council approved to refer the subdivision application to the Planning and Zoning Commission and the TIF application to the TIF Committee for their recommendations.
