Despite losing in the first round of the playoffs, the Sigourney Savage baseball team still had a relatively successful year at 12-10.  Their season was also good enough, according to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association, to warrant two selections to the all southeast-district teams.

The Savages had one first-teamer in junior Carson Crawford (no relation to head coach Lee Crawford).  He was the top hitter on the team, boasting a .433 batting average.  He also led the team in RBI with 23 and reached base in one form or another almost 60 percent of the time.  Crawford was also nearly perfect defensively, posting only one error through 22 games.

Junior Mac Conrad was named to the second team for his performance across the board.  Conrad was a solid addition to the Savage lineup, batting .345 and scoring 22 runs, which is good for second on the team.  He also swiped 12 bases on 13 attempts, also the second-highest number on the team.

Despite the offensive accolades, much of Conrad’s success came on the pitcher’s mound.  He was often their go-to guy when they needed the door slammed, as he was the only Savage to post multiple saves this season.  His 1.83 ERA was the second-lowest on the team, and he posted 11 strikeouts in just 7.2 innings of work.

Both Conrad and Crawford will return next year for their senior campaigns.
