With the 2018 baseball season wrapping up on Saturday, the academic all-state teams list was released around 10:00 Monday morning.  Washington’s Erik Murphy’s name was on that list.

According to the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association, players are nominated by their coaches based on outstanding academic, moral and athletic characteristics.  The top 22 nominees across the state are selected for the first team, and the next 22 are given second-team recognition.

Murphy’s academic all-conference nod would suggest strong academic characteristics, and his leadership and play in his senior season was mentioned by head coach Nathan Miller several times throughout the season.  Murphy was named to the second academic all-state team, which means he will not be honored at the IHSBCA’s All-Star Banquet, but he will be given a certificate in recognition of his accomplishment.
